The Saddle bag by Dior, icon of the noughties.
The Saddle bag, created in 1999 by John Galliano, is one of the fashion House's flagship pieces. The illustrious French House came into being 52 years earlier and completely revolutionised the world of fashion. In fact, from the very beginning, Dior wanted to distinguish itself from the other brands around at the time by proposing a strong, resolutely feminine style. It heralded the start of the New Look and of silhouettes which accentuated women's waists and busts. The arrival of John Galliano at the helm of the House would be a turning point in the brand's image which was as provocative and sulphurous as it was elegant. He is the designer behind the Saddle bag, which is a clean break with Dior's previous successes, namely the Lady Dior and Miss Dior bags.
The emergence of an It-bag that flies of the shelves.
Although very different from the bags previously designed by the House, the Saddle does still call on certain of the brand's codes which it twists for purpose. The bag has a graphic form inspired by the world of horse riding, which is obvious from its undeniable resemblance to equestrian saddles. The materials used are often leather and canvas and the inevitable metal "D", another reference to the House of Dior is all present and correct. Certain versions are mono colour whilst others are adorned with the brand's famous monogram. When the bag came out, success was instantaneous. Ten years later, it felt much more like a vintage item but came back with a vengeance on the occasion of Dior's AW 2018-2019 fashion show, proving that fashion really does go around.
